Show Notes Transcript

Have you ever heard the phrase, I’ll believe it when I see it? If you use this phrase it means you are skeptical of something. You are not sure it will happen so you sit back and wait for evidence to appear that will help you believe it. While this may be a good way of thinking in some situations, this is not a good way of thinking when you are talking about your goals or what you want in your future. When thinking about those things, you should flip this phrase upside down and tell yourself, “I’ll see it when I believe it”.

What I cover in this episode:

The difference between "I'll believe it when I see it", and "I'll see it when I believe it".

Old school and new school vision boards.

Why visualization works and examples to show you how.

Let’s take some action:

To help you with practicing visualization, I want you to do the following:.

  • First, identify a goal that you have. Be specific. For example, don’t say something like, “I want to have more money”, instead say, “I want to have X dollars in my savings account”, or  "I want to earn X amount of money in the next 12 months”.

  • Once you have your specific goal, visualize it in as much detail as possible. If you want, you can get actual images or words and either put them on a vision board or create a digital vision board but it is not necessary. You want to have the mental image of what it is that you want and to be clear about why it is important to you.

  • Finally, every day, visualize your goal as though it has already happened. You don’t need to spend a lot of time on this but spend a few focused minutes at least once per day.

What you believe you can achieve so believe it, and let’s see what happens my friend.

Useful Resources:

Do you worry too much, overthink, assume the worst-case scenarios, spend a lot of time focusing on negative things that have happened, or discredit positive things happening? If so, you are dealing with the human brain we have all been given and you are not alone.

The good news is, you can change this and it may not take as long as you may think! If you want a free resource that will help you examine your thinking patterns, and change those that are not serving you, grab my 5 Common Thought Distortions Guide HERE.

I'm also here to inspire you, challenge you, and cheer you on so that you can create the life of your dreams and beyond. Have you ever heard the phrase,"I'll believe it when I see it."? If you use this phrase, it means you were skeptical of something. You're not sure it will happen so you sit back and wait for evidence to appear that will help you believe it. While, this may be a good way of thinking if someone has made empty promises to you in the past, so that you don't get your hopes up, in general, this is not a good way of thinking when you're talking about your goals or what you want in your future. When thinking about those things, you should flip this phrase upside down and tell yourself"I'll see it when I believe it." In today's podcast, shorty episode, I'm going to talk to you about the power of visualization and why it works. Well, hello friend. I'm so glad you're here for this shorty episode about visualization. You have probably heard talk about vision boards, which is one form of visualization, but it's not the only form. In the past, I've cut out words, phrases, and pictures from magazines to create vision boards that I kept in my office to look at, to inspire me on a daily basis. And while I actually enjoyed doing this, creating them took me a long time and I also learned that buying a lot of magazines all at once can be very expensive. Now I create a vision board on the computer, pulling together images, words, and phrases of things that inspire me and remind me of what I want to achieve in the coming year. I also spend time most days looking at my vision board, thinking about what I want to achieve, how I'll feel when I achieve it, and reminding myself why it's important to me. This is where the phrase, I'll see it when I believe it comes in. Now this is not a woowoo. If you think about it, it'll magically appear process. When you visualize what you want in your future, you should get excited about it, motivated about it, and when you feel this way, you'll take actions that will help move you closer to it. Let me give you kind of a silly example. Let's say that you have a vacation planned and you're going to a beautiful tropical island resort. You go to the website and research the activities that are available. You check the weather forecast. You look at the restaurant options and what vibe they have. And if you love travel in our planner like me, you may do this many times before the actual trip takes place. What happens as a result of doing this is you may decide you'll pack a nice dress to wear to the resort's fancy restaurant one night. You may decide you'll buy a nice sun hat because you expect bright sunny days each day. You may even decide that you'll work out a little more and eat a little healthier for the next two months, so that you feel more comfortable in your bathing suit and summer clothes. You may also consider if you can fit everything into a carry-on bag or if you'll check your bag and pack more options for shoes and other fun things to wear. By going on the website, visualizing what it would be like to be at the resort, and anticipating what things you would be doing while there, you then take actions prior to the trip to make sure you are prepared and which likely will make your experience once there even better. This same thing applies to all areas of your life. When you visualize them happening ahead of time, you start to prepare for them, and sometimes this happens unconsciously. You see yourself already there, which will increase the chances that you'll act in a way that will move you closer to your goal. You may notice things you would otherwise not even notice that will help you achieving what it is you're wanting to achieve. For example, if you were really focused on improving your finances, you may notice online information and resources related to financial planning that really end up helping you out, which someone who's not focusing on finances wouldn't even see. You may be driving down the road and you see a sign for a financial planner in your area that you would otherwise not even know is there if you weren't focused on your finances. Another example, as you may know, I love all things Peloton. So when I'm out, I notice when people are wearing Peloton apparel and my ears perk up if I hear someone speaking about Peloton in any way. Recently I was with someone and there were other people around us talking about Peloton, and the person I was with didn't notice at all, while I immediately tuned into the conversation because Pelotons top of mind for me. While this doesn't tie to a specific goal, it's evidence of how this works. When you're thinking about something, you notice a lot more things around you related to that thing. Another example would be, if you had a vision of your dream home, and you spend time thinking about it regularly, you may not yet know how you'll find it or how you'll afford it, but you'll start to become aware of possibilities and opportunities that you might not otherwise notice or even consider that will move you closer in the direction of that dream home. So as I hope you're hearing, visualization is not about imagining something and then having it magically appear. It's about visualizing something and because you can see it and believe it, you put the work in and act in alignment with what is required to achieve it. So as we do in all my episodes, we're gonna take a little action. So to help you with this process, I want you to do the following, and this information will be in the show notes as well, so you can go back and reference it there. First, I want you to identify what is a goal that you have, and I want you to be really specific. For example, don't say something like, have more money. Or I want to have more money. Instead say, I want to have X dollars in my savings account, or I want to earn X amount of money in the next 12 months. Once you have your specific goal, visualize it in as much detail as possible. If you want, you can get actual images or words and either put them on a paper or a cardboard vision board or create a digital vision board, but that's not even necessary. You want to have the mental image of what it is you're wanting to be clear about and why it's important to you. And then finally, every day visualize your goal as though it's already happened. You don't need to spend a lot of time on this, but spend a few focused minutes, at least once per day. What you believe you can achieve. So believe it and let's see what happens, my friend.
